Capsulitis/Pre-subluxation Syndrome
This painful problem usually occurs under the 2nd toe joint. Commonly, there is a deep soreness and an inability to walk barefooted or in shoes that lack cushioning. Most of the time, the 2nd toe is contracted (hammertoe), and a bunion deformity may exist. Xrays provide valuable information about the bony structures that contribute to the entity. Treatment usually revolves around redistribution of weight by the use of padding and/or orthotic devices. Surgical intervention is indicated in refractory cases.
